The Latest Consumer News About Swiss Watches

July 6th, 2009 Posted in Jewelry

There was an interesting survey done recently. Four hundred people were asked if they could tell the difference between a replica Breitling Bentley and a real one. The interesting bit was that not one of them could tell the difference. To be honest though, it’s not exactly surprising. The latest generation of replica watches are not the type you find on your market stall. The replica Breitling watches used in the test were priced at between $100 and $200 compared to the $3000 to $7000 of the original, yet were made of the same materials, and had the same level of accuracy.

The main difference is that the replicas are made in Japan by skilled engineers. Japan has always been synonymous with quality and reliability without the price tag. Swiss watches are made in Switzerland where the labor rate is extortionately high, and the focus on quality comes at a high premium.

The other reason for the price difference is the exclusivity. Since losing the battle for watch accuracy in the 1950s, Swiss watch manufacturers have instead focussed on prestige and exclusivity. There are several ways to achieve this, but the way the Swiss did it was to price their watches so high that only a few people can buy this. That’s why you can buy two Japanese replica Omega watches for under $500, or one real Omega watch for $5000. their goal is that to maintain the wealthy or film star image, and to do that they price it so only the wealthy or the film stars can afford them. That’s why these days most of us are smarter and buy the Japanese replicas which are of the same quality, same materials, and in every other way identical to the original.
