Gambling Addictions Destroy More Than Finances
If you suffer from a gambling addiction, the thrill of winning a bet can be enough to blind you from the reality that you are severely hurting your loved ones. It is one thing to gamble away your income, but when you lose your family’s life savings, you can literally destroy a marriage in the blink of an eye. Even if your luck has been good so far, all it takes is one bad bet to set you into a downward tailspin. Gambling can be a fun and harmless pastime if you place relatively small wagers on an infrequent basis, but once the casino employees know more about your everyday life than your spouse does, it may be time to ask yourself a very important question – is gambling more important than learning how to save my marriage?
The fact of the matter is, gambling can cause your spouse to seek a divorce way before it gets to the point of hitting rock bottom. For a husband or a wife, seeing their spouse continually ignore their emotional and physical needs because they would rather spend time at the casino may give them all the motivation that they need to walk away. It isn’t just the money you are spending that hurts your spouse, it is the time and energy that you put into a ‘hobby’ that makes them feel inadequate and betrayed. To get a handle on your gambling, you need to speak to an expert. Sometimes counseling for marriages is a good first step, but there may be something much more deeply rooted in your soul than a marriage therapist is trained to handle. Your marital counselor may refer you to an addiction expert, or recommend that you go to inpatient treatment. If your spouse is more important than gambling is to you, you really need to step back from the slots and face the fact that marriage itself is not a betting game.
