Traveling Abroad: Health Away from Home

August 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Travel

While many people are aware that traveling to less industrialized countries can be a health risk, few understand fully that taking a trip to a place that seems comparable to their own region can bring its own health problems. Our bodies are accustomed to particular conditions, and when exposed to new conditions they may react unexpectedly, even if this new situation is not necessarily considered a health risk to locals.

For example, when traveling to a foreign country, take time to adapt to the water. Even if the water is safe for human consumption, it will contain different substances than your local tap water. While citizens of New York City may healthily consume tap water in Manhattan, a Londoner may fall sick drinking from the same tap. The reverse is also true. Cooked food containing water is usually less irritating to the unconditioned digestive system. Bottled drinks, especially those from global distributors will be safe as well, as they usually contain distilled water. After a short time with increasing exposure, your body will adjust to unfamiliar water.

Another consideration is receiving the proper immunizations before traveling. Most Americans have received measles and mumps immunizations, but a few have not, because the diseases are practically non-existent here. That isn’t the case around the world. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you need additional shots before your trip.

Coffee Customs: Moka Pots

August 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food

Italian coffee, commonly referred to in America as espresso, has become a mainstream drink in the US thanks to its flavor and its great versatility in beverage recipes like cappuccinos, macchiatos, and even distinctly non-Italian specialties.

As a result, home espresso machines have become a popular item on department store shelves, and less expensive versions are available all the time. But many coffee lovers find themselves disappointed with the results of affordable machines, and cafe grade equipment can run thousands of dollars–more than even the coffee-obsessed may be willing to spend.

It’s worth noting, when considering these factors, that numerous Italian households use a far more humble piece of equipment to brew their concentrated traditional coffee. Commonly referred to as Moka pots, these low-tech stove-top coffee brewers are the option of choice for many Italians and other Europeans. They’re priced more reasonably than any home espresso machine that produces even mediocre results. More sophisticated than conventional percolators, the three chambered pots rely on heat and pressure to brew espresso. Some versions have milk frothing or quick cappuccino making capabilities. They’re no more time consuming or difficult to operate than an electric espresso machine.

Moka pots are available at fine coffee shops, and can be purchased online.

Better Butterfly Gardening

August 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Home & Garden

If you have an established butterfly garden, but aren’t seeing the numbers or varieties of butterflies you expected, consider making some improvements.  You probably have already planted butterfly-friendly plants, but there are many other things you can do to make your garden more attractive to the winged beauties.

In breezy areas, adding a windbreak can create a butterfly oasis.  They have difficulty flying when their delicate wings are battered by strong winds—and a strong wind to a butterfly may not seem very strong to you.  Consider adding a corner that is protected by taller plants, or train a climbing vine over a protective trellis.

Something that is easily added also is a source of warmth.  Even if your garden is already in a sunny spot, add some dark, decorative stones or small statues.  Dark colored stone will absorb the heat of the sun and offer the butterflies a place to rest and warm their wings for flying.

Water can also be a powerful attractant, and butterflies need very little to make them happy.  Creating some small, shallow puddles can help.  A ‘butterfly bath’ is easily created by using a pretty plate or bowl of water, with ‘islands’ of decorative stones for butterflies to land on.

Roofing in Southern California

August 10th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Construction and Maintenance

When conducting home improvements and routine maintenance, the roof is an element often overlooked. But your roof is a vitally important factor in the comfort and value of your home. Few things can be as completely devastating to your home, its contents, and your property overall as serious roof damage.

In a housing market where maintaining the highest potential value for your home has become paramount, the state of your roof has become even more important. Southern California is no exception to this nationwide phenomenon. To avoid allowing your home’s appraised value to drop, you must keep up with regular maintenance and inspections of your roof.

Inspections must be done by certified professionals, and using an online directory to find someone local and knowledgeable about the conditions in your area that may affect your home is crucial. Whether you are searching for roofers in Orange County or trying to find reputable San Diego roofing professionals, consider using the power of an online directory.

You’ll find much more extensive information, more conveniently, through an online directory of Los Angeles roofing contractors than you will by attempting to call each listing in the phone book. Remember that paid television commercials, phone book ads, and other marketing sources may tell you only what the companies wish to advertise. A unbiased, third-party source like a reliable online directory of local contractors can provide you with more complete, trustworthy information about the companies you are interested in.

Research thoroughly, and be rewarded with the security of a well-roofed home.

Don’t Struggle Through Taxes Alone..Get Help!

July 31st, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Accounting

There is nothing quite so stressful as when the time approaches to file taxes. Not only do you have to gather all the information needed, but you have to spend hours drudging through the paperwork, the questions, the boxes, and without ever knowing for sure that you are doing it right.

But you don’t have to take the time (or risk) to get your IRS tax filing out on time. There are plenty of places that where you can get help with taxes, and with any questions you may find yourself with as April 15 draws closer.

While you are perfectly capable of using the IRS software to file taxes online yourself, or using a tax system such as Turbotax to get your information filled out, there are some situations where you will want to have a professional work with you.

For example, if you own a small business, or if you are a contractor and need to pay taxes on your individual earnings per quarter, then you will want to speak to an accountant or tax professional.

If you worked for a private contractor or employer who did not give you a W2, or who paid in cash without providing any records, it is important that you speak to a tax professional on how to figure out what you made, and how much you owe. Remember, you are responsible in the above situations to pay your taxes every year.

Even if your case is simple, it is always a good idea to seek professional assistance. Not only will this give you some assurances that everything has been filed correctly, but it will give you audit protection, and ensure that you only have to pay the smallest amount possible. It may also provide you with a refund, or a larger refund than you would have gotten originally.

Finding the Right Leads

July 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Marketing and Advertising

If you work in phone sales you know how important it is to find the right leads to produce higher sales with fewer calls. While it is possible to do this with a great deal of experience, it is a lot of work, and the payoff is not always as high as you might hope. That’s why most successful telemarketers who make high commissions turn to marketing data lists, which provide the information that they need to make better calls with less guesswork.

Some are easier to find and buy than others, such as credit repair travel leads, which are a dime a dozen on the Internet. While some are arguably more effective than others, you are more likely to find a decent-sized sales list out of the names given, which can be rotated and earned on for quite some time. These tend to be better than those provided as starters by employers, as they are larger and much more varied.

Another popular type of list are lottery leads. Anyone who has used these knows their potential for both commercial and personal use, and will likely have used them consistently for quite some time. Anything in the contest of sweepstakes genre are probably your best bet for earning a more valuable income, as they are popular for so many people from so many walks of life. The bigger the list, the bigger your chances of earning (or winning), so you should always go with any company offering larger ones, rather than the cheaper, and less effective, sweeps lists.

Replica Watches – The Pros And Cons

July 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Footwear

It’s an irony of the 21st century that the more people want exclusivity, the less they can achieve it. Take the case of replica watches as an example. We all desire the expensive Swiss watches that we see advertised in all the glossy magazines. However, to maintain exclusivity, the Swiss watch makers deliberately overcharge by thousands simply to stop normal people like us wearing them. By taking them out of the reach of normal people, the watch makers believe that only the super rich will buy them and this will maintain the clique.

However, there is an easy way round this. Put simply, why spend thousands on the real article which is priced to stop you buying it, when replica watches cost generally less than $200? The normal person on the street can gain the prestige and exclusivity that comes of wearing one of these watches without having to re-mortgage the house. We get the same accuracy, the same looks, and the same material as the genuine article, without having to spend a fortune on companies who would rather we didn’t buy from them.

And, if the sales figures are to be believed, most people would agree with this. Sales in replica watches far outstrips the sales of the originals. Everyone wants their very own Rolex, Cartier, or Breitling, but can only afford to pay $200 instead of $7000. And with the plethora of places offering replica watches these days, it’s never been easier to get your hands on one.

The Latest Consumer News About Swiss Watches

July 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Jewelry

There was an interesting survey done recently. Four hundred people were asked if they could tell the difference between a replica Breitling Bentley and a real one. The interesting bit was that not one of them could tell the difference. To be honest though, it’s not exactly surprising. The latest generation of replica watches are not the type you find on your market stall. The replica Breitling watches used in the test were priced at between $100 and $200 compared to the $3000 to $7000 of the original, yet were made of the same materials, and had the same level of accuracy.

The main difference is that the replicas are made in Japan by skilled engineers. Japan has always been synonymous with quality and reliability without the price tag. Swiss watches are made in Switzerland where the labor rate is extortionately high, and the focus on quality comes at a high premium.

The other reason for the price difference is the exclusivity. Since losing the battle for watch accuracy in the 1950s, Swiss watch manufacturers have instead focussed on prestige and exclusivity. There are several ways to achieve this, but the way the Swiss did it was to price their watches so high that only a few people can buy this. That’s why you can buy two Japanese replica Omega watches for under $500, or one real Omega watch for $5000. their goal is that to maintain the wealthy or film star image, and to do that they price it so only the wealthy or the film stars can afford them. That’s why these days most of us are smarter and buy the Japanese replicas which are of the same quality, same materials, and in every other way identical to the original.

How Designer Watches Can Beat The Recession

July 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Jewelry

We all know about the credit crunch by now, and the recession is a word that is too well known to some of us for comfort. We’re all worried about job security, and we’re all looking for a way to save a bit, to cut costs, and just to get through. Well, one possible option is imitation goods like replica Rolex watches.

We all wear a watch, all obsessed by the time of day. Wearing something beautifully engineered on our wrists gives us comfort that we’re not going to miss an appointment or meeting, happiness in the beauty, and, if we’re philosophically inclined, wonder in the linear nature of time itself ticking away on our wrists. And, if we’re more philosophically minded than materially minded, paying less than $150 for replica IWC watches makes more sense than paying several thousand for the real thing. And it makes sense, when you think about it. The watch is in some ways the ultimate symbol of the past hundred years. Mankind’s obsession with time in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has allowed us to measure every facet of our universe with amazing accuracy. Without our obsession with time, and our quest to make it more accurate, a watch would never have become a status symbol. And these days, the smart ones among us buy replica Breitling watches because we know that the accuracy is as great as a real Breitling and that our quest for the last hundred years to find perfection ends here.

Rolex Watches And Why They’re Desirable

July 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Jewelry

With the growth in internet shopping, it is amazing how much shoppers can save by purchasing replica goods online instead of the real item. Take, for example, a replica women’s Rolex watch and compare it to the real thing. Only the experts would be able to tell them apart, and in terms of accuracy, well if anything, the replica Rolex watches are sometimes more accurate than the original due to the use of laser calibrated machinery and quartz crystals.

Swiss watches as a whole built a reputation during the nineteenth and early twentieth century for accuracy due to the limitations of materials back then. However, once the vibration in quartz crystals became used in watches from the late 1960s onwards, Swiss watches lost that edge of accuracy as they were still using mechanical pieces which were subject to tiny atmospheric changes, unlike quartz which remains the same no matter what temperature or pressure.

Of course, most of the replica watches out there use exactly the same materials as the genuine Rolex, but made in Japan by skilled engineers instead of the similarly skilled engineers in the prohibitively expensive Switzerland. This is why a replica women’s Rolex costs about $150, compared to the genuine item which would cost at about $7000 if using the same metal strap.

Given these circumstances, it isn’t surprising that people these days prefer to buy replicas than the real thing. They’re built to the same levels of quality, look identical, and in many cases are actually slightly more accurate. The only difference is the several thousand dollars in cost.
