Traveling Abroad: Health Away from Home

August 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Travel

While many people are aware that traveling to less industrialized countries can be a health risk, few understand fully that taking a trip to a place that seems comparable to their own region can bring its own health problems. Our bodies are accustomed to particular conditions, and when exposed to new conditions they may react unexpectedly, even if this new situation is not necessarily considered a health risk to locals.

For example, when traveling to a foreign country, take time to adapt to the water. Even if the water is safe for human consumption, it will contain different substances than your local tap water. While citizens of New York City may healthily consume tap water in Manhattan, a Londoner may fall sick drinking from the same tap. The reverse is also true. Cooked food containing water is usually less irritating to the unconditioned digestive system. Bottled drinks, especially those from global distributors will be safe as well, as they usually contain distilled water. After a short time with increasing exposure, your body will adjust to unfamiliar water.

Another consideration is receiving the proper immunizations before traveling. Most Americans have received measles and mumps immunizations, but a few have not, because the diseases are practically non-existent here. That isn’t the case around the world. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you need additional shots before your trip.
