Recreation: Make the Most of Your Gym Membership

August 20th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Recreation

If you’re considering joining a local gym, or already have, you should also consider what benefits you can expect from your membership. While the obvious benefit is access to exercise equipment, trainers, and classes, your gym is more than a healthy habit–it’s also a source of recreation.

We’re all too likely to neglect our gym memberships because we think of attending as a sort of chore–one which we have the dubious privilege of paying for. While you may never look forward to your thrice weekly date with the elliptical, utilizing your gym as a social gathering place may at least assist you in getting the most from your membership there.

Remember that your gym isn’t there just to help you burn calories or improve your cardiovascular health. It may offer educational classes, or classes which, in addition to their exercise benefits, appeal to your other interests. For example, if you’re interested in eastern philosophy, yoga and tai chi classes offer a wonderful way to interact physically with abstract ideas.

And the gym offers you many opportunities to meet people, whether a workout buddy who may end up being your hiking partner, or a fellow classmate you go out for smoothies with after your spinning session.

Traveling Abroad: Health Away from Home

August 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Travel

While many people are aware that traveling to less industrialized countries can be a health risk, few understand fully that taking a trip to a place that seems comparable to their own region can bring its own health problems. Our bodies are accustomed to particular conditions, and when exposed to new conditions they may react unexpectedly, even if this new situation is not necessarily considered a health risk to locals.

For example, when traveling to a foreign country, take time to adapt to the water. Even if the water is safe for human consumption, it will contain different substances than your local tap water. While citizens of New York City may healthily consume tap water in Manhattan, a Londoner may fall sick drinking from the same tap. The reverse is also true. Cooked food containing water is usually less irritating to the unconditioned digestive system. Bottled drinks, especially those from global distributors will be safe as well, as they usually contain distilled water. After a short time with increasing exposure, your body will adjust to unfamiliar water.

Another consideration is receiving the proper immunizations before traveling. Most Americans have received measles and mumps immunizations, but a few have not, because the diseases are practically non-existent here. That isn’t the case around the world. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you need additional shots before your trip.

Coffee Customs: Moka Pots

August 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food

Italian coffee, commonly referred to in America as espresso, has become a mainstream drink in the US thanks to its flavor and its great versatility in beverage recipes like cappuccinos, macchiatos, and even distinctly non-Italian specialties.

As a result, home espresso machines have become a popular item on department store shelves, and less expensive versions are available all the time. But many coffee lovers find themselves disappointed with the results of affordable machines, and cafe grade equipment can run thousands of dollars–more than even the coffee-obsessed may be willing to spend.

It’s worth noting, when considering these factors, that numerous Italian households use a far more humble piece of equipment to brew their concentrated traditional coffee. Commonly referred to as Moka pots, these low-tech stove-top coffee brewers are the option of choice for many Italians and other Europeans. They’re priced more reasonably than any home espresso machine that produces even mediocre results. More sophisticated than conventional percolators, the three chambered pots rely on heat and pressure to brew espresso. Some versions have milk frothing or quick cappuccino making capabilities. They’re no more time consuming or difficult to operate than an electric espresso machine.

Moka pots are available at fine coffee shops, and can be purchased online.

Better Butterfly Gardening

If you have an established butterfly garden, but aren’t seeing the numbers or varieties of butterflies you expected, consider making some improvements.  You probably have already planted butterfly-friendly plants, but there are many other things you can do to make your garden more attractive to the winged beauties.

In breezy areas, adding a windbreak can create a butterfly oasis.  They have difficulty flying when their delicate wings are battered by strong winds—and a strong wind to a butterfly may not seem very strong to you.  Consider adding a corner that is protected by taller plants, or train a climbing vine over a protective trellis.

Something that is easily added also is a source of warmth.  Even if your garden is already in a sunny spot, add some dark, decorative stones or small statues.  Dark colored stone will absorb the heat of the sun and offer the butterflies a place to rest and warm their wings for flying.

Water can also be a powerful attractant, and butterflies need very little to make them happy.  Creating some small, shallow puddles can help.  A ‘butterfly bath’ is easily created by using a pretty plate or bowl of water, with ‘islands’ of decorative stones for butterflies to land on.

Roofing in Southern California

When conducting home improvements and routine maintenance, the roof is an element often overlooked. But your roof is a vitally important factor in the comfort and value of your home. Few things can be as completely devastating to your home, its contents, and your property overall as serious roof damage.

In a housing market where maintaining the highest potential value for your home has become paramount, the state of your roof has become even more important. Southern California is no exception to this nationwide phenomenon. To avoid allowing your home’s appraised value to drop, you must keep up with regular maintenance and inspections of your roof.

Inspections must be done by certified professionals, and using an online directory to find someone local and knowledgeable about the conditions in your area that may affect your home is crucial. Whether you are searching for roofers in Orange County or trying to find reputable San Diego roofing professionals, consider using the power of an online directory.

You’ll find much more extensive information, more conveniently, through an online directory of Los Angeles roofing contractors than you will by attempting to call each listing in the phone book. Remember that paid television commercials, phone book ads, and other marketing sources may tell you only what the companies wish to advertise. A unbiased, third-party source like a reliable online directory of local contractors can provide you with more complete, trustworthy information about the companies you are interested in.

Research thoroughly, and be rewarded with the security of a well-roofed home.
